Serbia and Sweden were meant to battle for the final spot in the Quarter-Final Round at the U16 European Championship Women but it turned out an uneven duel as Serbia run away with the game 73-39.The Serbs clinched the fourth seed in Group E behind tremendous performances by Sanja Mandic and Natasa Kovacevic. Now they face Turkey in the Quarter-Finals. Sweden will compete for ninth place honours.
Serbia quickly coasted to a solid lead. Thanks to Natasa Kovacevic's 10 first quarter points they led 16-11. They added to that lead with a 6-0 run shortly after the second quarter began.
Serbia's advantage inside was evident.
They scored 26 points in the paint during the first twenty minutes.
Kovacevic was simply unstoppable and poured in another 8 points before the halftime. She scored her 18 points in just 17 minutes. Sanja Mandic also had the hot hand and stayed perfect from the field (4/4 FG) and totalled 11 points in the first half when her team led 41-26.
Sweden could not match Serbia's firepower in offense. They trailed by as many as 26 points (30-56) with two minutes remaining in the third quarter. Serbia closed out the quarter strong with another 6-0 run.
The Serbs entered the final ten minutes with a 62-30 lead and clear evidence of who would be the team to advance to the Quarter-Final Round.
Kovacevic ended the game with 23 points in as many minutes. Sanja Mandic had the perfect game. All of her 7 field goal attempts (6/6 from three point distance) found their mark.
